Ratings Watch: Disney Channel UK & US, Nickelodeon

Across the pond, Disney Channels UK had an impressive first quarter, reaching 12.8 million viewers between January and March 2009, as all three of its channels saw record ratings performances.

Playhouse Disney, in particular, saw its best-ever UK quarter, doubling its share year-on-year to 1.8%, bringing in 5.8 million viewers including two million kids, up 14% on the previous year. Handy Manny, subsequently, saw its best quarterly reach with 3.7 million viewers, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse attracted 4.4 million viewers over the last two quarterly periods.

The premiere of Sonny With A Chance on Disney Channel UK, meanwhile, went on to become the best ever live-action launch amongst individuals, reaching 294,000 viewers on its premiere on Friday April 24 at 5.10 p.m.

As for movie channel Disney Cinemagic HD, it reached 3.9 million viewers, up 29% on the previous quarter and coming in as the second most popular premium offering.

State-side, Disney Channel came in as TV’s top network in total day with tweens nine to 14 during the week of May 11-17, thanks to Sunday’s Night of Premieres that featured new eps of Hannah Montana, Jonas and Sonny With A Chance, bringing the channel up by 14% year-on-year.

Disney Channel gained 10% (kids six to 11) and 14% (tweens nine to 14) on a year-to-year basis in prime, as Sonny and Jonas were the top two telecasts for the week in girls six to 11 and with tween girls. It was also Jonas‘s second most-watched telecast to date in viewers and all target kid demos, along with it placing number one at 8 p.m. with girls six to 11 and tween girls.

On the preschool side, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Saturday was the week’s number one telecast with kids two to five, also ranking at the top for the week and in the key demo based on all airings. Special Agent Oso also saw top ratings, coming in as the most-watched weekday telecast on record with its Thursday airing, coming in second among all telecasts and becoming DC’s top weekday 8 a.m. telecast in the net’s history. It also registered its largest weekly weekday audience to date in the preschool demo.

And on the Nickelodeon front, iCarly came in as the top kids’ show with total viewers (4.3 million) during the week of May 11, as the ep ‘iReunite with Missy’ (Saturday, May 16, 8-8:30 p.m. ET/PT) ranked as broadcast and basic cable’s top show for the week among kids two to 11, kids six to 11 and tweens nine to 14.

Meanwhile, a new ep of True Jackson, VP‘s ‘Amanda Hires a Pink’ (Saturday, May 16, 8:30 p.m. [ET/PT]), came in as the week’s number-two telecast on broadcast and basic cable with kids six to 11 behind iCarly, as well as the number-four kid-targeted telecast with total viewers. The ep also posted triple-digit gains over last year with key demos.

A new ep of The Penguins of Madagascar (Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. ET/PT) slid in as the number-three kid-targeted telecast with total viewers, drawing nearly 3.9 million.

Altogether, Nick came away as the top-ranked basic cable network in total day with kids, tweens and total viewers for the week.
