As Barbie continues celebrating her golden anniversary, Mattel has tapped Universal as its global home entertainment and TV rights distributor (excluding North America and certain other territories) for the property’s animation franchise.

The agreement will see Universal Pictures International Entertainment acquiring the DVD and download-to-own rights for Barbie, while NBC Universal International Television Distribution manages international TV rights.

NBCU, meanwhile, is going to be handling the UK DVD and international TV distribution rights along with an overall licensing agreement for all worldwide territories, excluding the US, Canada and others.

Under the 10-year agreement, UPIE will also distribute all existing Barbie back-catalogue product outside of the UK, as well as 10 new DVD titles over the next four years in all international territories. Barbie and the Three Musketeers, the 16th feature-length animated movie, is the next new release, slated for a September release. The franchise has sold more than 62 million DVDs to date.
