BBC doc series Planet Earth has been picked up by Scholastic for a US kids publishing program.

Scholastic now holds book rights for the US and Canada in English and French and will publish and distribute Planet Earth titles through its Trade, School Book Club and School Book Fair channels starting this fall. First up are a full-color 48-page Planet Earth Scrapbook and a Planet Earth Reader, featuring photography in an easy to read format. And for 2009, full-color 98-page Guide to the Planet will launch in time for Earth Day next April.

Keeping with the spirit of the eco-conscious series, the books will be printed on 30% post-consumer waste recycled paper.

BBC Worldwide North American Planet Earth agent Joester Loria Group brokered the deal.
