Lionsgate is going into production with its first animated television, a revamped version of the iconic ’60s toon Speed Racer. In conjunction with New York-based Animation Collective, Lionsgate is producing 26 new eps of the series targeting kids six to 14 that will bow on Nicktoons US in 2008.

John and James Rocknowski, principals at Speed Racer Enterprise, are acting as executive producers along with CEO of Animation Collective Larry Schwarz.

The new TV effort is not affiliated with the Warner Bros. blockbuster of the same name that has Matrix duo Larry and Andy Wachowski at the helm, but you can expect the Nicktoons launch to follow the theatrical release date of May 9, 2008.
