MTV International is gearing up to make further inroads into Asia with the launch of MTV Japan slated for January 2001. Working in tandem with local mediaco @JapanMedia, MTV Japan will replace existing music channel Vibe, which broadcasts to 2.8 million households via cable and satellite. Officially targeting viewers 18 and up (though likely to also attract pop-hungry tween eyeballs), MTV Japan plans to trigger local production, and the channel’s management team will tweak the sked based on feedback from local viewers. Homegrown fare will also be supplemented by MTV’s global events and other tune-related content.
