London-based Optomen Television is bringing Jill Murphy’s elephant family to TV. The Large Family features six elephants facing everyday family tensions, and is planned as 13 or 26 x 8.5-minute episodes.

Budgeted at about $US11,000 per minute, the stop-motion preschool series is scheduled for fall 2000 delivery in the U.K. and early 2001 outside the U.K. At press time, Optomen was negotiating with potential U.K. and U.S. co-production partners to produce the series. Murphy, the author of The Worst Witch book series, released the first book starring the elephant family in 1986, and the four titles, published by Walker Books, have sold more than four million copies worldwide. Murphy will be involved in the creation of the series, but her role was to be determined at press time.
