LONDON: ITV breakfast broadcaster GMTV has bought up the top-rated Australian children’s series Bananas in Pyjamas.

GMTV is launching the series in a blaze of publicity, hoping the success of the show in Australia and the U.S. will rub off in the U.K.

The mischievous banana twins, B1 and B2, have enormous marketing and spin-off opportunities, having reached biggest-selling children’s video status in their native Australia. Retailers across the U.S. predict the characters will be one of the top 10 toy products in 1996.

GMTV needs a new hit to boost its Saturday morning children’s lineup. Bananas in Pyjamas will fit into the slot that introduced Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to the U.K.
