Canada may get its own kids’ channel.

TELETOON, an animation service backed by the big names in Canadian children’s programming, is one of several applications that have been submitted in a call for new specialty television services.

Animation studios Nelvana and Cinar have joined the Family Channel and YTV, currently Canada’s only children’s specialty TV service, in the TELETOON proposal.

YTV has also filed an application for TreeHouse TV, a service aimed at preschoolers, and Vision TV, Canada’s religious broadcast service has an application for a TV service aimed at kids 12 and under called The Children’s Television Network.

CanWest Global Communications, the leading network in children’s television in Canada, is proposing a commercial-free and violence-free service for kids two to 9, called Kids TV.

Canada’s broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission, will being hearings in May.
