This year’s upcoming E3 will be a particularly significant one for the gaming scene given there will be no major new hardware announcements from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo – and since sales of physical software in the US spiraled down 27% in March to US$406 million. Nintendo’s new Figurine Platform is just one example of continued plasticity taking place in the industry.
Despite the launch of Nintendo’s new Wii U console, continuing sales success for the Xbox 360, as well as growth for Nintendo DS and Skylanders accessories, overall physical retail sales of video games in the US dipped 11% for November 2012, according to NPD data.

It’s likely that you won’t get to the top of the $25-billion video gaming industry without making a few friends. If there’s one thing to take away from this year’s E3, it’s that companies are clearly making a large push to create and market games designed to keep the living room and families social through interconnected play.
