The Inspired Leader
It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you.
The Inspired LeaderI’ve learned a lot about courage and resilience this month from guests on my weekly online radio show, Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, including Paralympic Skiing Champion Chris Waddell and Gerry Laybourne, a legendary leader in the television industry. Here are some of their inspiring mantras.
Choose Ease in 2012
The Inspired LeaderBack in December 2011, my radio show guest, Bette George, invited me and all of those listening to set an intention for the New Year. (Note: she invited us to set an intention, rather than a resolution.) I set the intention of “choosing ease” in 2012 meaning I would attempt to choose the simplest and easiest solutions to the day’s challenges, rather than choosing the “best” or “highest” or most elaborate ones. Well, I’m now more than one month into the year and I find that this intention is fun to live!
Like a Boss…What Inspiring Leaders Actually Do
The Inspired LeaderTo kick off the Kidscreen Summit, I participated on a panel facilitated by Donna Friedman Meir. The four panelists (Angela Santomero, Maggy McGuire, Tim Brooke-Hunt, Tom Lynch) were invited to share their stories and provide a perspective about leadership and what they’ve learned over the years as groundbreakers in the kids’ media field. Here’s what I learned from four great leaders in your field.
Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First
The Inspired LeaderAs a coach, I often conduct 360 reviews for my clients. After years of doing these interviews, what I’ve discovered is that when we are driving hard 24/7, multi-tasking at meetings, and forcing ourselves to keep working even on sick and vacation days, we are far from impressive to those who work with us. If you’ve fallen into a pattern of sacrificing your own well-being for work, admitting it to yourself is an honest first step. Then, sit down with yourself and write down the “operating rules” you have for yourself.
Finding Your Calling
The Inspired LeaderDo you ever wonder if your life and career are right for you? Last Monday on my weekly online radio show, Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, I interviewed a legendary coach whose work has been life-changing for millions over the past three decades. Richard Leider wrote The Power of Purpose which is geared towards helping people discover their purpose in life. After years of researching the topic, Leider discovered a formula for finding your purpose that I’d like to share with you.
Learn from the Best
The Inspired Leadere it or not, I wasn’t actually born a leadership coach. In fact, in 2001, I had established myself as a senior change leader and organizational strategist and was busy building an international strategy consultancy when I read a cover story in Fortune magazine featuring Cynder Niemela, a talented executive coach based in California. I read the article with fascination and knew I found the profession that I was born to do. So, what happened next? First, I decided to find out how valuable coaching really was by hiring Niemela to coach me in my new executive job.
Be Bold!
The Inspired LeaderThe saying goes that if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten. Are you satisfied with how your life and career are shaping up?
Ringing in the New!
The Inspired LeaderThe new year has arrived and now that we’ve had some time to reflect on our 2011 accomplishments, it’s time to plan for 2012. What will your vision be and how will you achieve your goals?
Ringing Out the Old Year
The Inspired LeaderAs 2011 winds to a close, it’s time to look back and see how far you traveled this year. Don’t make a single New Year’s resolution for 2012 before you’ve paused to really take stock of how you’ve grown and what you’ve accomplished and learned in 2011.
Feeling Stuck
The Inspired LeaderSometimes, we just feel stuck. Sometimes, it seems too hard to summon up creative juices for creating a vision or even a refreshed resume. When this happens to me, I need to pause, regroup and give myself time to untangle the elements that have derailed me.

The definitive kids ent resource.
