My TEDxTransmedia Talk
Cosmic StreetcornerI went to Switzerland at the end of last month to deliver a talk on transmedia for renowned nonprofit think tank TED (Technology Entertainment Design) and thought I should share it here. What it felt like right before I went on… My TEDxTransmedia talk: All your thoughts are welcome…
Monster Mystery Solved! Kid Sister Cleared of Childhood Crime
Cosmic StreetcornerIt was Christmas morning 1967. Mom and Dad and my kid sister Tami were still asleep as I tiptoed to the living room to scout presents under the tree. We’d only been in the Lower East Side projects apartment a short time, and money was scarce, but my Mom always made Christmas special, and the [...]
Arriving at Evergreen Case Study: Hot Wheels, Part 3
Cosmic StreetcornerIt was the summer of 2002, and Mattel had just signed off on our Hot Wheels Universe Mythology. We were working with their in-house producers to develop a story that would serve as a CG-animated mini-series, around which we would have to build a meta-narrative of sorts to account for what happens to each of [...]
Mapping Out Evergreen Case Study: Hot Wheels, Part 2
Cosmic StreetcornerI’m back! Many apologies for the long absence! Since my last entry, I’ve traveled around the entire world teaching and listening with people about transmedia storytelling. What was once a little known academic concept is now proliferating into a significant paradigm shift, not only in Hollywood but also everywhere from Cardiff, Wales to Sao Paulo, [...]
Whole new worlds: Transmedia storytelling opens licensing vistas
NEWSThe entertainment industry at large has come to recognize that young adults and kids are consuming content voraciously, in ways not dreamt of even 10 years ago – they’re looking to follow the story surrounding a given property on as many mediums as possible, be it traditional TV, films, fan sites or related products. But to make a property truly work across the various platforms out there, the entertainment concept has to be conceived as bigger than any one medium and constructed with a sense of how each grand story arc will play out across each media touchpoint. Transmedia storytelling, as it’s become known, is really the art that’s driving this approach.
Racing Toward Evergreen
Cosmic StreetcornerCase Study: Hot Wheels Part 1 The winter of early 2002 had been a bitter one for my team. We were winding down our “Never Surrender” tour of New York City public schools in the wake of 9/11, and were realizing that Starlight Runner’s venture capital funding was never going to be completed. Our money [...]
The Secret Sharers
Cosmic StreetcornerOver the past couple of weeks, some friends and colleagues have emailed to ask me whether I’ve gone out of my mind. It’s one thing, they said, to prattle on for 40 minutes about what I do for a living at a seminar. That’s good business; keeps a high profile. But then they surf over to [...]
Transmedia Production is a Technique
Cosmic StreetcornerHave you ever followed a local band that wound its way through the bar circuit? They were your band, you learned the lyrics to their songs, loved them even when they had an off night, and cheered when they announced they got a record contract and were headed for the big time. But then you [...]
A touch of darkness
Cosmic StreetcornerLet’s get this out of the way right now, in case you haven’t already figured it out: I’m a geek. So a year or so back when my 6 year-old Evangelia came home from school and solemnly told me that she heard from some older kids in the schoolyard that “something bad is going to [...]
Introducing Cosmic Streetcorner
Cosmic StreetcornerI had just set foot on the production lot of Globo Network, about 50 miles outside of Rio de Janeiro, when I noticed something strange was going on there. Signs with characters from James Cameron’s Avatar were cropping up all over the place, even in the golf carts that were being used to wheel my [...]
