Online video hub Netflix has inked a new multi-year licensing deal securing exclusive US rights to first-run live-action and animated movies from Disney.
The deal, which helps Netflix keep pace with premium cable services such as HBO and Showtime and marks the first time a major Hollywood studio has bypassed those channels, will see feature films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Disneynature become available to Netflix members shortly after they leave theaters.
Disney direct-to-video new releases will hit Netflix from 2013 and the two companies also signed a multi-year deal for older catalog Disney movies including Dumbo, Pocahontas and Alice in Wonderland.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
