CBC ramps up digital kids programming

The Canadian pubcaster has greenlit and renewed a raft of new kids content for its OTT platforms CBC Gem and French-language ICI Tou.tv.

In line with its commitment to double the amount of kids content on its new CBC Gem streaming service and offer shows for a wider range of young audiences, Canadian pubcaster CBC has commissioned the platform’s first original scripted and factual programs for kids.

First up, CBC has greenlit a 10 x 11-minute action-adventure series for tweens entitled Detention Adventure (pictured). Produced by LoCo Motion Pictures and Broken Compass Films, the show will premiere this spring as CBC Gem’s first kids scripted series. CBC has also commissioned Let’s Talk About Sex, the English-language version of On parle de sexe. Offering age-appropriate information on healthy sexuality for tweens, this 35 x five-minute series from Montreal-based Echo Media (Toopy and Binoo) will bow in 2020 as the first factual series for kids on CBC Gem.

In other new kids content, CBC has renewed 40 x 90-minute English- and French-language series L’Agent Jean from producer Happy Camper Media, in partnership with French-Canadian pubcaster TFO. Two new live-action fiction series for four- to seven-year-olds will also premiere this fall.

For the French market this year, new original commissions for ICI Tou.tv include a pair of 10 x 10-minute tween fiction series—Nomades from producer Trio Orange and Avec Moi from Attraction Images—and producer KOTV’s magazine show 14 Mille Millions de Choses à Savoir (35 x 15-minutes).

CBC Gem currently offers more than 200 hours of advertising-free programming for young Canadians. In outlining CBC’s OTT programming future, CBC President and CEO Catherine Tait announced last September that the pubcaster would double down on kids content for the service to match the amount of content already available on ICI Tou.tv.

In other CBC Kids news, CBC Kids Olympics and CBC Kids’ Gary the Unicorn and Mr. Orlando won 2019 Kidscreen Awards yesterday for Best Website and Best On-Air Host or Hosting Team, respectively.
