Nick celebrates SpongeBob with content and CP

Nickelodeon is launching a TV special, YouTube channel and vinyl figures to mark the 20th anniversary of the sea sponge series.

Nickelodeon will fete the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants with new content and consumer products. The series launched on July 17, 1999, and to mark the occasion the kidsnet is premiering a new original mixed live-action and animated special “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout” on July 12.

Nick will also air new episodes this summer, and the year-long celebration will end in 2020 with the summer premiere of the feature filmThe SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, from Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures.

A new product line from master toy partner Alpha Group will feature toys, collectibles, plush, novelties, vinyl figures showcasing classic moments from the series and toys that incorporate Nickelodeon slime. Select products are currently available through Amazon, followed by the full range rolling out with retailers worldwide. Additionally, new categories such as the first-ever range of SpongeBob cosmetics are launching as part of the roll-out. Nick reports the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise has garnered US$13 billion in retail sales of consumer products since its launch.

Nickelodeon also unveiled a dedicated YouTube channel for the brand, featuring music from the show and new content including the short-form series Bikini Bottom Mysteries. The kidsnet will also bow a new mobile game that allows fans to be a fry cook in Bikini Bottom.

SpongeBob SquarePants airs in 208 countries and is translated into more than 55 languages. The series was created by Stephen Hillenburg.
