Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has officially partnered with Netflix on stop-motion musical Pinocchio, marking his animated feature film directorial debut.

Set in 1930s Italy, the pic will be produced by del Toro (who is also writing the script), The Jim Henson Company (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) and ShadowMachine (Bojack Horseman, The Shivering Truth). ShadowMachine will shoulder the film’s stop-motion animation production, which is expected to begin this fall.

del Toro previously hooked up with Netflix and DreamWorks to create and executive produce the hit series Trollhunters, which is due to spawn two spin-off shows in the coming months. 3 Below will premiere in December with stories about two teenage aliens fleeing a surprise takeover of their home planet, while Wizards is expected to launch in 2019 and bring together the worlds of wizards, aliens and trolls.
