The global VOD app is launching a new parent-approval feature and an experience geared towards the eight to 12 set.

YouTube Kids is making changes to its app to combat growing concerns over inappropriate content and also to pull in the tween set.

The app has so far been geared mainly towards preschoolers, but the new mode for eight to 12-year-olds containing content including popular music and gaming videos, can be enabled by parents by selecting the “older” version when they set up a new profile or update an existing one. The older-skewing section is beginning to roll out in the US and will expand globally soon.

The “younger” version of the app will continue to be the default, with a variety of sing-along songs and appropriate learning videos for kids seven and under.

To accommodate younger users, YouTube Kids is also rolling out a new parent-approved content feature. The control will allow parents to handpick every video and channel available for their child to view in the app. It’s available globally now for Android, and iOS is to follow shortly.

The feature is enabled when parents go to settings and select the “Approved content only” option under “Content”.

YouTube Kids just rolled out three new features in April giving parents more control over the videos and channels accessed by their kids, including a Collections feature where parents can select what they want their kids to watch from new groupings of videos and channels put together by the app’s team and trusted partners including Sesame Workshop and PBS KIDS.
