Turner’s one-year-old Boomerang SVOD service has ordered a pair of new original animated series, renewed six fan-favorite original programs and announced product enhancements—including a full Spanish-language experience.
New original Warner Bros. Animation series Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs! and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? will be added to Boomerang’s growing lineup of original content in 2019.
The former follows the adventures of best prehistoric friends Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble as they explore beyond the comfort of Bedrock in a dangerous wilderness called The Crags. Mark Marek (MAD) and Marly Halpern-Graser (Right Now Kapow) are producing, with Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) on board as executive producer.
Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? will see the iconic Scooby-Doo gang team up with a raft of celebrity and pop culture stars including NBA superstar Chris Paul, recording artists Halsey and Sia, SNL‘s Kenan Thompson, Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Mark Hamill, Steve Urkel (voiced by Jaleel White), Batman, and Wonder Woman, to name a few. Chris Bailey (Kim Possible) is producing with Register, again, as executive producer.
As for returning original series, new second season episodes of Be Cool Scooby-Doo! will premiere on Boomerang through 2018, while season two of Bunnicula will continue to air this year with a newly greenlit season three launching in 2019. The new second season of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz will bow with a new movie special on Memorial Day in the US, followed by season two premiere episodes into 2019.
Season two premiere episodes of The Tom and Jerry Show, meanwhile, will stream through 2018 with a newly greenlit third season expected for 2019. In addition, second season eps of New Looney Tunes will be added to the service through 2019 and Wacky Races has been picked up for season two, which will launch later this year.
Boomerang has also announced that previously acquired original series Wind in the Willows from UK distributor HoHo Rights will premiere exclusively in the US in 2019.
As for Boomerang’s enhanced consumer experience, a full Spanish-language option will launch this Memorial Day weekend in the US, while avatar creation and show discovery have been added to strengthen user personalization. The service will also offer the ability to share playlists that feature various toons characters.
Rounding out the new features, universal search will be available on May 24 across Roku, Amazon and Apple to help users find Boomerang content when searching for their favorite animated series and characters (the feature will launch on Google later this summer), and Boomerang will also launch via Android TV beginning this Memorial Day Weekend.
Since debuting in April 2017, Boomerang has grown its library to feature more than 5,000 titles including Hanna-Barbera, MGM and Looney Tunes fare, alongside original content. Users also now have access to more than 2,000 titles for streaming or download-to-go instantly.
The new content activity follows the recent promotion of Cartoon Network programming VP Vishnu Athreya to SVP of programming. In his new role, Athreya will add oversight of series development for Boomerang and will continue to helm scheduling, acquisitions and programming content strategy across all Cartoon Network- and Boomerang-branded linear and non-linear platforms.
