Hulu has signed a straight-to-series deal with Comcast NBCUniversal-owned AwesomenessTV and online self-publishing platform Wattpad.
Based on Wattpad author Zoe Aarsen’s supernatural thriller Light as a Feather (which has garnered 2.9 million reads), the 10-episode series of the same name will begin production in June. The first Wattpad story to be picked up by Hulu, Light as a Feather will be a co-produced by AwesomenessTV and Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet Productions. The live-action show will center around five teen girls as they deal with supernatural circumstances following a group sleepover.
Lee Fleming Jr. (She’s All That, One Tree Hill) is series creator and executive producer, while AwesomenessTV’s Jordan Levi, Shelley Zimmerman, Joe Davola and Brett Bouttier will also co-executive produce along with Wattpad’s Aron Levitz and Erich Lehrman, and Grammnet’s Tom Russo, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov.
Hulu has worked with AwesomenessTV before on a 10-episode horror series entitled Freakish, which premiered in 2016. Hulu has also previously acquired exclusive US SVOD rights to two feature-length documentaries from AwesomenessFilms: Snervous, a documentary about YouTube star Tyler Oakley, and mockumentary Janoskians: Untold and Untrue.
Other Wattpad stories that have made their way to screens include Komixx Media Group’s film adaptation of The Kissing Booth for Netflix.
