Oddbods enters AR/VR mobile gaming space

Among One Animation's three new mobile gaming partners is Maysalward, a Jordanian developer with expertise in augmented and virtual reality technology.

Singapore’ One Animation has secured a trio of mobile gaming deals for its Emmy-nominated series Oddbods.

First up,  Amman, Jordan-based Maysalward is set to launch an augmented reality coloring app that lets fans customize their favorite Oddbods characters in 3D. The developer is also releasing a virtual reality freemium game for Google Cardboard, Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR that offers a 360-degree fully immersive Oddbods viewer experience.

The move into AR is a timely one for Oddbods as more companies look to capitalize on the technology, including kidsnets Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, which both announced augmented reality apps in their 2018/2019 upfront presentations—the former for Sky Whale and its popular “Do Not Touch” button, and the latter for Ben 10.

While VR has more hurdles to jump before becoming mainstream, especially for kids, cheaper platforms like Google Cardboard and more social initiatives like Nick’s first IMAX multi-player VR experience SlimeZone are proving to be good starting points to gain the trust of parents and kids.

Looking at other new Oddbods games for iOS and Android devices, Maysalward has a third game in the works—a soccer-themed dominoes title—while Hong Kong’s MAMO and SEGA Subsidiary goGame are set to launch a spot-the-difference title and an endless runner app, respectively. The games will roll out globally this year.

One Animation’s mobile push further expands the global and digital presence of Oddbods, which was recently bolstered by deals with Netflix and Amazon. Odbbods’ CP clout also continues to rise, with One Animation appointing Kids Station Toys as North American master toy partner last November, and signing a number of new European licensing deals.
