AR and AI startup Osmo has collaborated with Mattel on a new Hot Wheels-branded augmented reality game. iPad-enabled MindRacers combines real Hot Wheels cars with AR technology, allowing kids to race through eight different worlds.

MindRacers comes with six collectible Hot Wheels cars, a launcher and 32 game pieces. It is available for kids ages seven and up as an add-on to existing Osmo sets for US$59 at PlayOsmo.com and Amazon.com.

The toy launch comes less than a year after Mattel, along with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Collab+Sesame and Shea Ventures, invested US$24 million in Osmo’s Series B funding round.

Osmo has a suite of seven programs incorporating apps and physical pieces to teach coding, physics and digital literacy. Former Google execs launched the company in 2014 with Words, Tangrams and Newton, before expanding to STEM-focused apps Masterpiece, Numbers, Coding, Monster and Pizza Co. Most recently, Osmo made its way onto  Amazon’s list of hot 100 holiday toys for 2017.
