London-based Cinesite Studios has acquired Canadian full-service animation facility Nitrogen Studios.
Vancouver-based Nitrogen is known for its animation work on Thomas and Friends, and recent Seth Rogen’s R-rated animated comedy, Sausage Party. It is also currently in production on DreamWorks’ Guillermo del Toro-directed series Trollhunters, the first season of which bowed on Netflix in December. Nitrogen is also co-producing CGI-animated feature Arkie with Passion Pictures Australia.
Nitrogen employs 70 creative and production staff, and is led by its president and CEO Nicole Stinn. A Cinesite Studios spokesperson confirmed that there will be no significant personnel changes at the studio.
In the months ahead, Nitrogen will be incorporated into the Cinesite brand. Terms of the transaction, which closed March 1, were not disclosed.
This is Cinesite’s second acquisition in Vancouver, after the global VFX and animation house merged with the city’s visual effects giant Image Engine in July 2015. In addition to London and Vancouver, Cinesite also has facilities in Montreal.
