In a move that expands its core audience beyond kids ages three to eight and increases parental controls, Amazon’s kid-focused subscription service FreeTime Unlimited has added a raft of tween-skewing content and a new proprietary management feature called FreeTime Smart Filters.
At no additional cost to subscribers, the service’s library now includes thousands of videos, educational apps, games and books for older kids featuring brands like Sonic the Hedgehog, Monument Valley, iCarly and Star Trek.
And the new FreeTime Smart Filters, which roll out starting tomorrow, provide stronger age-appropriate content recommendations and blocking options.
New series joining the service include Legend of Korra, Gortimer Gibbons, Thunder Birds Are Go, Just Add Magic, RL Stein’s The Haunting Hour, Superman the Animated Series, Design Squad and Big Time Rush (pictured).
App and game additions include Slugterra, Lightbot Programming Puzzles, Star Wars Rebels, Winx Bloomix Quest, Temple Run: OZ, American Girl, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Monster High and Ever After High. And incoming book titles include The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Black Pearl, The Sign of the Beaver, Harry Potter, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, Big Nate, DC Super Heroes and Scooby Doo.
FreeTime’s younger audience is being courted with new content, too, in the form of apps (The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, Big Hero 6 and Disney Junior Appisodes), books (The Polar Express, Sleep Like a Tiger, and Mr. Wuffles) and videos (Dino Dan, Zoboomafoo, Thomas and Friends, Wishenpoof and Tumble Leaf).
FreeTime now features more than 13,000 videos, educational apps, games and books, plus more than 40,000 YouTube videos and websites.
The service is currently priced at US$2.99 per month for Prime members and US$4.99 per month for everyone else, available exclusively on Amazon Fire tablets.
