Genius Brands International (GBI) has joined forces with Sony Music Entertainment and its Legacy Recordings label on a new music label for kids, Genius Brands Music, which will include content from GBI’s upcoming tween girls brand SpacePOP.

Along with SpacePOP (pictured), the label will feature music from GBI’s other original properties including Baby Genius and Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab, as well as its third-party brands like book-based franchise Llama Llama.

All new musical concepts will also be developed specifically for the label, which will be distributed by Sony globally across digital channels and at retail this year.

Genius Brands Music arrives as GBI is in production on more than 100 serialized 2D-animated videos for the music- and fashion-driven SpacePOP brand, which will be distributed via a branded YouTube channel and across other digital platforms.

The first six videos will premiere this summer in tandem with Not Your Average Princesses, the first title in a middle grade book series based on the IP from MacMillan with graphic novel inserts by author Erin Downing and illustrations by Jen Bartel. The property will also be supported by music-based apps, linear TV exposure and an L&M program, which is expected to roll out across the US this fall.

This is not GBI’s first deal with Sony Corporation of America. It recently secured a multi-year agreement through which Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will provide marketing and distribution of the Kid Genius and Baby Genius labels in North America.
