With New York International Toy Fair well underway, the Toy Industry Association paid tribute to the industry’s most coveted playthings at its 16th annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards ceremony on February 12, where Doc McStuffins and Star Wars were among the big winners.

Doc McStuffins Pet Vet Checkup Center by Just Play (pictured) took home the overall Toy of the Year award prize, and the item was also named Preschool Toy of the Year. And deemed to have had the greatest success spreading its brand throughout the industry, Disney and Lucasfilm Licensing’s Star Wars was awarded the Property of the Year.

The People’s Choice award, which was gathered through a consumer-driven online voting process, was handed to KidKraft’s Uptown Espresso Kitchen, while the Activity Toy of the Year was presented to Spin Master’s Bunchems. In owning the ever-growing toy-to-life gaming category, the e-Connected Toy of the Year was presented to Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition.

As for toys that have fallen into specific gendered categories, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens Millenium Falcon took home the Boy Toy of the Year, while Moose Toys’ Shopkins Scoops Ice Cream Truck snagged the Girl Toy of the Year prize.

The Educational Toy of the Year prize was presented to VEX Robotics Robotic Arm (HEXBUG), the Innovative Toy of the Year went to Spin Master’s Meccanoid G15, and Hasbro’s Pie Face Game was recognized as the most outstanding children’s board, car, CD-ROM or electronic game.

Meanwhile, the Infant/Toddler Toy of the Year was presented to Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo (Fisher-Price), and the Specialty Toy of the Year was presented to Tumble Trax Magnetic Marble Run (Learning Resources).

The more than 80 TOTY Award finalists were announced late last fall, and this year’s nomination committee comprised more than 40 mass/specialty retail buyers, youth experts, academics and journalists, who together selected the finalists from more than 700 toys submitted by more than 200 companies.
