After the global success of Disney Channel original movie Descendants, a script for Descendants 2 (working title) has been commissioned from the movie’s screenwriters Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon.

The first movie, which stars the progeny of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil, is now US cable TV’s fifth highest-rated movie of all-time.

Directed, choreographed and executive-produced by Kenny Ortega of High School Musical fame, and executive-produced by Wendy Japhet (An Education, The Italian Job), Descendants premiered on July 31 delivering 12.2 million viewers in the US.

It also broke viewing records on the WATCH Disney Channel app, with 3.3 million video views since July 24 and worldwide has reached more than 32 million total Disney Channel viewers.

In other Descendants activity, the brand’s publishing program will see author Melissa de la Cruz write a second novel, Return to the Isle of the Lost, which will arrive in May 2016. Four Descendants books in total from Disney Publishing Worldwide have been on the New York Times bestseller list for a combined 41 weeks.

Disney Channel’s animated spin-off Descendants: Wicked World is also resonating with kids. Its debut last month drew 5.9 total TV viewers, 1.7 million on WATCH and more than 10 million to date on YouTube.

For additional digital growth, a mobile game app from Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media will be released in November following the success of July’s Descendants Karaoke app.
