DHX Media’s consumer products arm DHX Brands has tapped Italian toyco Giochi Preziosi to distribute Teletubbies toys in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Giochi Preziosi will distribute the line from UK-based Teletubbies master toy partner Character Options, which includes plush (basic, feature), plastics (play sets, figures, vehicles) and bath toys, following the series broadcast in each respective territory (yet to be announced). Canada’s Spin Master, meanwhile, is handling toy distribution across the US, Canada, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, and will launch the line in 2016.
The new CBeebies-commissioned Teletubbies series (60 x 12 minutes), produced for DHX by UK prodco Darrall McQueen, is slated to debut on the UK pubcaster this fall. Broadcast deals are in place for the upcoming reboot to air in 2016 on Nick Jr. (US), Gulli (France) and on DHX Television’s preschool channel Family Jr. in Canada. And just last week, Italian broadcaster Rai picked up rights to the both the classic and new Teletubbies series for its preschool channel Rai YoYo.
Tinky Winky, Dispy, Laa-Laa and Po are returning to the new series, which looks to build upon many familiar features of the original 1997 show while updating it with new features like the Tubbies’ touchscreen belly badges and CGI animation.
The classic preschool TV series created by Anne Wood has aired in more than 120 territories in 45 different languages and it was the first western preschool property to air on Chinese pubcaster CCTV. And with no new episodes produced since 2001, Teletubbies maintains a significant following on YouTube with more than 65 million views per month.
