Thomas and Friends chugs into YouTube Kids

HIT Entertainment is developing a slate of original videos for YouTube Kids, featuring the Thomas and Friends brand.

YouTube Kids content is being rolled out fast and furiously. Along with Outfit7′s Talking Tom and Friends series debuting on the app, Mattel’s preschool content development division, HIT Entertainment, has announced it is developing a slate of original videos for YouTube Kids, featuring Thomas and Friends.

The new video shorts (52 x three minutes) feature Thomas the Tank Engine, having adventures off the Island of Sodor in destinations like London, Paris and NYC.

Starting in March, Mattel will roll out a new video each week. The shorts will debut on the Thomas & Friends YouTube channel weekly, under a “World Tour” tag, and content will be available via the YouTube Kids app.

Part of Mattel’s multiplatform approach to content distribution, the shorts will feature a variety of themes, including videos designed in 2D comic-strip-style animation, live-action playroom shots, songs from the original live-action TV series and Thomas Comedy Showtime—a mash up of characters and moments from the Island of Sodor, accompanied by funny sports-style commentary.

The launch of the new content comes as the brand celebrates its 70th anniversary with new content and partnerships.
