Wibbly Pig, the cross-ocean co-pro between the UK’s Wish Films and Toronto, Canada-based 9 Story Entertainment inspired by a bestselling publishing property has gone into production after signing BBC Worldwide as global distributor and licensing rep.

The 52 x 10-minute preschool series is based on books authored by Mick Inkpen that have sold in the millions and tell the story of Wibbly Pig, a gentle soul who engages readers in a conversation throughout the narrative. CBeebies is getting ready to air Wibbly in Fall 2009.

Will Brenton, co-founder of Wish Films, says the series is closely patterned on the books using Flash animation to mirror the watercolour illustrations. As well, an off-screen child’s voice will hold a conversation with the titular character throughout the eps.

‘We are going to set this within the child’s world,’ says Brenton from his London office. ‘Our mantra throughout is to try to reach the ‘truth of a child’. So, the series will move in and out of fantasy, just as a child might.’

Brenton says it’s too early yet to talk about further distribution and licensing plans for the series, although he is excited to have BBCW involved to suss out the opportunities.

Production on Wibbly Pig is underway in the UK and Canada.
