Young Canadian fans of The Big Comfy Couch can now cuddle up with their own Loonette and Molly dolls.
The two plush dolls were introduced last year in the U.S. and have just recently come to Canada in limited release. Toy versions of Major Bedhead, Granny Garbanzo and the Dustbunnies are also on store shelves in the U.S., and an 18′ talking version of Loonette by Playmates Toys is scheduled for release at the end of this month. According to Ryan Slate, product manager for Playmates Toys, additional items will be introduced in the U.S. in the coming months and then in Canada. Playmates Toys will support the products with advertising.
Blockbuster Video in Canada has begun selling eight Big Comfy Couch videos, which are being distributed by Malofilm in Toronto. Six of those are currently available in the U.S. and are distributed by Time-Life Kids.
Show creator Cheryl Wagner, of Radical Sheep Productions in Toronto, says, ‘We’re most interested in creating quality products that positively reflect what the show is about. Our main concern is that children who watch the show will enjoy the dolls and other Comfy Couch items.’
The floppy plush Molly doll, created by Commonwealth Toys, was recently one of the top 15 unadvertised toys sold in the U.S. in an October 1996 survey of retailers and distributors conducted by The Toy Book.
